About Due Date Calculation
How Due Dates Are Calculated

Due dates are typically calculated using several methods:

  • Last Menstrual Period (LMP): The most common method adds 280 days (40 weeks) to the first day of your last period. This assumes a 28-day cycle with ovulation on day 14.
  • Ultrasound: Early ultrasounds can accurately date a pregnancy by measuring the embryo or fetus. This is often considered the most accurate method.
  • Conception Date: If you know when conception occurred, the due date is calculated by adding 266 days (38 weeks) to that date.
  • IVF Transfer: For IVF pregnancies, the due date is calculated based on the transfer date and the age of the embryo at transfer.
Why Due Dates Matter

Due dates help healthcare providers track your baby's growth and development, plan appropriate prenatal care, and make decisions about labor and delivery. However, it's important to remember that only about 5% of babies are born exactly on their due date.

Factors That Can Affect Your Due Date
  • Irregular menstrual cycles
  • Late or early ovulation
  • First-time vs. subsequent pregnancies
  • Maternal age
  • Family history
